Music Mends Minds Mission and Goals
Music Mends Minds’ mission is to create musical support groups for patients living with neurodegenerative diseases. These include Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, as well as stroke, traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our project improves the lives of patients, in addition to their families and caregivers, through the healing power of music. We envision creating musical ensembles around the globe to improve quality of life, well-being, and cognitive function. We also create meaningful support networks that connect patient and medical communities by providing critical emotional support, education, and participation in key research initiatives.
Every 3 seconds, someone is diagnosed with dementia. Every 65 seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Worldwide, over 50 million people have Alzheimer’s and over 10 million have Parkinson’s, with 50 - 80% of Parkinson's patients experiencing dementia. Millions more are living with other forms of neurodegenerative decline, PTSD, or traumatic brain injury, including approximately 800,000 new stroke victims each year.
MMM's primary goal is to improve the lives of our patients, their caregivers, and families by bringing music making to their communities. MMM plans to establish our Program Model under the guidance of the MMM Board of Directors, currently chaired by Dr. Ross Goldberg. Our staff includes a Board-Certified Neurologic Music Therapist to lead band rehearsals and design therapeutic interventions for band members to capture MMM’s impact on its participants.
MMM will continue to successfully pitch and establish new MMM/Rotary Bands, with the goal of recruiting at least 10 new band members in each community. MMM will achieve this goal by creating outreach materials to distribute to potential band members, supporting band leaders in recruitment and implementation efforts, and purchasing instruments and sound equipment for new bands.
